ECSPC STAGE COMBAT TRAINING:
Our unique approach to teaching stage combat has allowed STAGEFIGHT and the ECSPC qualification to become recognised as one of the most practical and historically accurate performance combat systems currently available. Our courses meet and exceed the levels of safety and standard of tuition of any other performance combat system and has become an industry accepted qualification for stage and screen productions.Training with STAGEFIGHT and the ECSPC focuses on technical elements that make choreographed fight routines much safer and more controlled. Our proven techniques have created ‘battle-ready’ actors and have helped to place many of our student into action roles for both the stage and screen, and as special combat extras in productions such as Game of Thrones, Vikings, Last Kingdom and Doctor Who.
ECSPC QUALIFICTION COURSES:
We teach basic, intermediate and advanced level stage combat courses covering a range of different armed and unarmed disciplines. These disciplines include classical, medieval, renaissance and early modern period weapons. Each qualification level builds on the previous levels training to develop well-trained and ‘battle-ready’ actors. The ECSPC’s advanced qualification is currently the onlystage combat qualification that includes multiple opponent training (i.e. fighting more that one opponent) as part of the course.
LEVEL-1-BASIC:
LEVEL-2-INTERMEDIATE:
LEVEL-3-ADVANCED:
Level-1-Basic is the foundation course that teaches the basic techniques of stage combat. Three combat disciplines are taught; UNARMED COMBATand DAGGER, these two systems form the basis of performance combat and are commonly used for stage and screen productions. The third discipline is normally a SWORDsystem of the instructors choosing. The course improves balance and coordination, and teaches basic choreography, linking actions, acting the fight, stagecraft, and safety during traiing and performance.
Level-2-Intermediate is designed to introduce students to performance combat using weapons that require heightened coordination. Students will be taught how to safely handle one of the largest weapons used on stage to one of the most complex. The syllabus includes; QUARTERSTAFF, LONGSWORDand RAPIER & DAGGER.
Level-3-Advanced is the most challenging of our students training courses. Unlike other performance combat systems that just add more and more weapons at each level (some that are rarely used on stage) the ECSPC only introduces two more systems, but revisits previous weapon systems from the view of combating multiple opponents. We are currently the ONLYstage combat training scheme that offers multiple opponent combat training at an advanced level. The syllabus includes; SMALLSWORD, SWORD & SHIELD, MEDIEVAL SWORDS and MULTIPLE OPPONENT COMBAT.
ECSPC TRAINING COURSES & CLASSES:
We run regular courses and classes throughout the year. Weekly classes currently run at The Blue Orange Theatre in Birmingham, West Midlands. They normally run over three terms of 10-weeks (30-weeks total) and finishes with a final examination that tests choreography, isolated actions, practical and theoretical knowledge for each level of training. Our intensive stage combat courses normally run over 6-days are currently held annually around Easter, over the summer and in autumn.Students must have successfully completed each training level before moving onto the next. For both weekly classes and intensive courses all attendees must be 18+ years minimum and have a reasonable level of fitness and mobility. For more information please contact us at: info@stagefight.co.ukor tel: 07813 308672.
WEAPONS & TRAINING EQUIPMENT:
At STAGEFIGHT we are continually investing in theatrical weaponry that is safe, practical and historically accurate. Unlike other stage combat organisations that substitute whatever weapons they have available, we always try to teach with the correct weaponry and equipment for the discipline being studied. We believe it is essential for all those who train with us to fully understand the handling characteristics of different types of weapons. This ensures that our students gain a thorough understanding of the system and a greater appreciation of the mechanics and techniques for more exciting and dramatic performances.

ECSPC SCREEN COMBAT TRAINING:
Popular TV-shows such as Game of Thrones and Vikingsand the boom in independant fim production has created great opportunites for actors and stunt professionals alike. These productions call for well-trained actors skilled in various combat disciplines that have experience of fighting on film and working on a film set.As with all ECSPC training, our screen combat courses go beyond the ‘set-fight routine’ methods of other training courses and have been specifically designed to provide actors with the practical training neeeded to become a successful screen combatant. These courses can also help martial artists make the transition to working on screen.Minimum age is 18+ years for all our screen combat courses.
SCREEN COMBAT: FALLS & JERKS
This is an additional course to our screen combat training that is taught by an experienced stunt coordinator. Our “Falls & Jerks” course is designed to introduce actors to the basic skills of falls and jerk backs that are commonly used during fights in action sequences. This is an essential skill for any screen actor, action combatant or stunt professional.
SCREEN COMBAT COURSE AND STAGE COMBAT:
Stage combat and screen combat share similar principles but are very seperate disciplines. Stage combat teaches actors how to effectively perform a set fight sequence that is to be performed before a live audience once per show. Screen combat requires an actor to perform fight routines both in-sequence and out-of-sequence while maintaining the same level of physical and mental intensity in front of a non-fixed audience (the camera) multiple times over many hours or even days.An understanding of stage combat and/or martial arts can be useful when making the transition from live fight performance to successful screen fighter, but there are many elements to screen combat that are not relevant to stage combat and vice-versa.As such we ask all performers interested in becoming screen combatants to attend our 1-day STANDARD COURSE, as this introduces many of the differences that are fundamental to screen combat. This acts as a foundation to all future levels of our screen combat courses.STANDARD LEVEL (FOUNDATION SKILLS):All students MUSTattend our STANDARD LEVEL COURSE which introduces students to the concepts of fighting on film and our approach to training. It covers the basics of unarmed and armed combat that are common to all genres of action film. Students will be taught how to perform safely and consistenltly to camera and will gain a firm grounding in the mechanics and techniques of screen combat. This initial screen combat course is the most practical and cost effective training currently available. Successful completion of this standard level course will provide an industry accepted training and attendance certificate.SCREEN COMBAT LEVEL ONE (Screen Fighter):Building on the techniques learned during our foundation level course, this two-day ECSPC SCREEN COMBAT LEVEL ONE introduces students to the concepts of DAGGER COMBAT, SWORDand SWORD & SHIELDcombat, that in the films are used by characters such as Rogues, Gladiators and Early Medieval Warriors.Successful completion of this course will provide an industry accepted Screen Combat Level-1 Qualification Certificate.SCREEN COMBAT LEVEL TWO (Screen Warrior):Building on the techniques learned during level one, this two-day ECSPC SCREEN CONBAT LEVEL TWO introduces a range of weapon disciplines such as AXE, SPEAR, STAVESand TWO-HANDED SWORDS. Characters such as Assassins, Vikings, Outlaws and Knightly Warriors are explored in detail and how they are represented in screen productions.Successful completion of this course will provide an industry accepted Screen Combat Level-2 Qualification Certificate.SCREEN COMBAT LEVEL THREE (Screen Champion):The level three training course introduces students to a range of weapons that became popular during the Early Modern Period. Weapons such as: RAPIER, RAPIER & DAGGER, SMALLSWORDand CUTLASS/SABREare taught, that were used by film characters such as; Duellists, Musketeer, Pirates, Gentlemen and Period Military Officers.Successful completion of this course will provide an industry accepted Screen Combat Level-3 Qualification Certificate.SCREEN COMBAT LEVEL FOUR (Heroes & Villians):The final level four training teaches the most technical and challenging of all our screen combat courses. This course focuses almost exclusively on dual wielded combat diciplines such as swords, axes and mixed weapons. The portrayal of film characters such as Heroes and characters and creatures from fantasy genre films are explored.Successful completion of this course will provide an industry accepted Screen Combat Level-4 Qualification Certificate.

ECSPC FIREARMS IN ACTION:
The safe and effective handling of firearms is an essential skill for any actor-combatant or stunt professional. With the introduction of the firearms (Amendment) Act 1997, it has been difficult for performers to gain access to the training which would allow them to portray the handling of a firearm accurately for the stage and screen. Working alongside an experienced, firearms instructor STAGEFIGHT has developed a modular based training system that focuses on all the essential skills necessary to safely handle and correctly portray action scenes using firearms. Designed to cover basic handling, tactical skills, dynamic movement and close quarter battle simulations, these training modules allow actors to portray a whole range of specialist characters for a range of action roles. All our firearms courses are either one-day or two-day intensive courses that require a minimum age of 19+ years to attend.
FIREARMS IN ACTION - BASIC HANDLING COURSE:
Basic handling is a one-day intensive course designed to teach actors how to accurately portray the use of a firearm during action scenes. This course teaches all the necessary skills to safely handle and use a handgun in a theatre or film setting. The module includes:•UK Firearms law in dramatic productions.•Types of firearms used on stage and screen.•Basic operation and handling skills.•Grips, stances and firing positions.•Sighting and target practice.•Holsters and fast draws.•Tactical and rapid reloads•Tactical and performance scenarios. For the duration of the training all students will be issued with their own personal weapon to ensure they get comfortable in the carrying and handling of a firearm.
‘ON THE FIRING LINE’Firearms Training - Basic Handling Course
FIREARMS IN ACTION - TACTICAL TRAINING COURSE:

School of Performance Combat
STAGEFIGHT was established by Raph Aldis in 2004 in the West Midlands region of the United Kingdom to fill a gap that had developed in stage combat tuition outside of the London area. For many years, actors wishing to train in stage combat were forced to travel to London for regular training or would have to wait for the occasional workshop to be run locally. With the aims of supporting central and northern based actors STAGEFIGHT offered the opportunity to train and qualify in stage and screen combat without the added expense of long distance travel and accommodation. It was a difficult start and an uphill struggle as the general mindset was if I want to learn stage combat I have to go to London. Slowly, over the next few years, STAGEFIGHT began to be recognised as a teaching alternative to the London-based organisations and began to attract attention from actors and theatre production companies from the South West all the way up into Scotland. Being centrally based made it easier (and cheaper) for actors to train closer to home, while allowing STAGEFIGHT to travel all over the country to choreograph shows and run stage combat workshops and courses.
‘THE QUALITY CONTROL BUILDING’STAGEFIGHT’s training venue in the old Tomkinson’s Carpet Factory in Kidderminster. The site was redeveloped to build a supermarket and housing estate.
In 2006, STAGEFIGHT moved into the ‘QUALITY CONTROL BUILDING’ that was part of the derelict Tomkinson’s Carpet Factory in Kidderminster. It was an old and drafty building with holes in the walls, gaps around the windows and no heating. After repairing the floor and cladding the walls, this became the home of STAGEFIGHT for several years. The building was always cold. In winter months dedicated students trained in multiple layers of clothing, wearing woollen hats or balaclavas. This made classes look more like a thieves convention than stage combat training. STAGEFIGHT also began to run basic stage combat qualification courses, using the set fight routine method used by many stage combat organisations. The turning point for STAGEFIGHT came in 2008 when Raph was invited to judge at a medieval and renaissance stage combat tournament held annually in Northern Italy. The tournament called for the performance of historically accurate stage combat routines and not the Hollywood style techniques that were traditionally taught by stage combat organisations. During the event Raph met Alberto Di Candia, an Italian fight director, historical combat practitioner and stage combat instructor. This meeting began both a friendship and a dialogue that planted the seed for the future growth and development of STAGEFIGHT and its training method. Returning to Italy the following year, STAGEFIGHT members Ian Page and Ben Hart presented an 18th Century smallsword fight based on the techniques of Domenico Angelo. This was the first time a British team had ever performed at the event. The routine was well received and awarded fourth place. The seed that had been planted in 2008 quickly began to grow. Having shared similar experiences during their early tuition, Raph and Alberto felt that stage and screen combat could benefit from going beyond the set fight routinemethods which were traditionally taught by stage combat organisations. Both had come from a martial arts and fencing background and believed that adopting a mechanics and techniquesapproach would not only increase the safety of performance combat, it would also improve the historical accuracy. A mechanics and techniques approach to training would also introduce students to many of the beautifully illustrated manuscripts and historical fight manuals that were being studied by historical combat enthusiasts.Since the late nineties historical fight books from the early medieval through to the renaissance were being studied, revived and developed into the combat sport of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). Traditional stage combat tuition tended to ignore these resources in favour of teaching a set fight routine using a range of different weapons, that effectively used techniques that were largely based on Modern Olympic Fencing. Although this approach could create very dynamic and exciting fight routines, it encouraged the belief that all weapons (particularly swords) were used in exactly the same way, and that western weapons, such as medieval swords and rapiers, were inferior to their Japanese and Chinese counterparts.
‘BRAVING THE COLD’Training in the The Quality Control Building
Since its birth in 2004 STAGEFIGHT had always believed in the journey of learning, discovery, trial and development. STAGEFIGHT instructors had travelled all over the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, attending classes, trialling workshops and developing a performance combat system that was based on techniques drawn directly from historical resources, but could also maintain the flare and dynamism of Hollywood-style fights. Meeting and working with Alberto helped to direct the pathway of discovery. Late in 2010, Raph Aldis and Ian Page travelled to Alberto’s home in Turin, Italy to finalise the performance combat system that began its development in 2004. A training scheme that offered basic, intermediate and advanced level stage and screen combat qualifications, taught with a martial arts mechanics and techniques approach. The system was flexible enough to encompass of a range of weapon systems and it would ensure they were presented with historical accuracy and dynamic flare. The system was christened the EUROPEAN CERTIFICATE OF SKILLED PERFORMANCE COMBATor The ECSPC. It would be taught initially in Italy by LAME REBELLI (Rebel Blades) Alberto’s school in Turin, and by STAGEFIGHT in the United Kingdom.
‘STAGEFIGHT ABROAD’Ian Page (left), Raph Aldis (middle) & Ben Hart (Right). Presenting a smallsword fight based on the methods of Domenico Angelo in Italy (2009)
The ECSPC training scheme was launched in the UK during 2011. Weekly classes began at The Blue Orange Theatre in Birmingham that quickly became popular and fully booked. Intensive training courses followed at Easter and during the summer. Since it’s launch our classes and course development has gone from strength to strength. ECSPC basic, intermediate and advanced qualifications rapidly became industry accepted, with many of our students gaining combat orientated roles in both stage and screen productions; in many cases being complimented on the skill, competence and professionalism they displayed. Shortly thereafter followed screen combat training, theatre and film firearms tuition and in 2015 the Level-4-Instructor Training Programme.STAGEFIGHT has grown out of a passion for performance combat and historical combat research. Our success is largely based on the dedication of its students and instructors. At STAGEFIGHT we believe in quality and not quantity. Classes are kept small and manageable to ensure our students receive the maximum exposure to training and tuition, while maintaining a safe and fun environment in which to practice. STAGEFIGHT has earned a reputation for ensuring the highest levels of safety and developing well-trained, skilled and highly motivated actor-combatants. STAGEFIGHT is certainly not the largest performance combat training school, but it is certainly one of the best.
‘EXAM DAY 2015’Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Level students enjoy exam success and two new instructors (Dan Gough and Marc Alden Taylor) qualify as ECSPC Instructors.

TESTIMONIALS:
ADRIAN BOUCHET
“I initially trained under another organistions qualification system to advanced level and in later years with Raph to the same standard. I have now worked with many fight directors and stunt coordinators using several different systems and can happily say that the techniques taught under the ECSPC by Raph have stood me in the best possible position to allow me to go out onto any stage or film/TV set with the utmost confidence and know that there is nothing I will be unable to handle. Raph teaches a complete system of fighting (rather than simply a collection of learned moves) based on the manuscripts and treaties of the original European fencing masters such as Fiore dei Liberi. His stage combat techniques are adapted for work in film and he knows the requirements to “sell” any sequence in either medium. There are many stage fight teachers out there.
